Summary
Development and validation of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale
Research has shown that rumination after the death of a loved one may influence the grieving process negatively. For instance, ruminative thought has been related to symptoms of depression and complicated grief. Although most research into rumination after bereavement has been done with the Ruminative Response Scale, or RRS (Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991), depressive rumination and grief-specific rumination may differ in important ways. Therefore, the development and validation of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS), a scale for measuring grief-specific rumination, is described in this contribution. In a prospective study over a six month interval,228 recently bereaved individuals filled out two questionnaires. Explorative factor analyses show that a hierarchical five factor model best explains the scores on the UGRS. Furthermore, the data support the reliability and the convergent, divergent, discriminant and criterion validity of the UGRS. Altogether, the UGRS seems a promising new instrument for assessing grief-specific rumination.
